Food Tour USA: The States With The Best Grub

People often think that America’s food culture is non-existent. That the nation is addicted to fast food and TV dinners. But America was designed to be a cultural melting pot when it was founded. And this idea has survived to the modern day. And nowhere is it more apparent than in the varied and amazing food culture’s of every state.

If you’re a foodie like me then you love nothing more than traveling to new locales and diving head first into the myriad of amazing dishes on offer. Finding the best restaurants and cafes. Experiencing the taste sensations waiting for you! Today we will be highlighting the different states in America with the best grub. So you can better plan your next trip to the states.

Illinois

Illinois is one of my favorite states to visit. With so many beautiful locales to visit and, most importantly, a diverse range of amazing dishes to sink my teeth into. Perhaps the most famous item you need to try while here is the Chicago deep dish pizza! This world renowned pizza style is often at the top of everyone’s bucket list when they visit Illinois. And for good reason too.

While in the state you should also try a Horseshoe sandwich. Made using two thick slices of Texas toast, this sandwich is coated with different meats, thick french fries, and a generous helping of melted cheese. For lovers of sweet treats you will be happy to hear that Illinois is home to the best pumpkin pies in the USA. Most major restaurants in the state will offer up a varied take on the dish.

Illinois is extremely cheap to visit when compared to some of the more popular states. And most cities will have a wide range of food tours you can attend to help you find the best dining spots in whatever city you are visiting.

Maryland

Maryland is one of those states that people often forget about. Which is a shame because Baltimore, one of the more popular cities in Maryland, is home to some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. Baltimore’s food culture is primarily focused around seafood and crab dishes. Crab cakes, crab dip, oysters, shrimp. Nowhere does it better than Baltimore.

Baltimore has a lot to offer outside of its food culture too. You can see the original Washington monument, visit the famous Lexington market, or pay a visit to the Edgar Allen Poe museum. I highly recommend getting an Airbnb as opposed to a hotel in Baltimore. They are, on average, far cheaper and better located. And, if you’re someone who doesn’t like to deal with the hassle of cleaning your Airbnb after your stay, there are plenty of companies offering Airbnb cleaning in Baltimore.

Louisiana

If you are someone who likes your food to have a bit more of a kick then you will love Louisiana. A lot of the most popular dishes take inspiration from the African and Caribbean cooking techniques that were popular in New Orleans during the early 1800’s.

Gumbo is one of the dishes you will see the most throughout Louisiana. Gumbo is a hearty stew often made with meat and shellfish, strong stock, celery, bell peppers, onions, and a thickener. It is a dish that is sure to leave your belly fully and your soul warmed.

Another dish you should definitely try while in Louisiana is Jambalaya. A flavorful rice based dish most commonly served with meat or shellfish. Both of these dishes are said to have originated from Louisiana. So when you’re eating them you are eating a part of the state’s history.

Texas

The Lone Star state, Texas is known around the world for big hats, beautiful deserts, and amazing BBQ. And it lives up to its reputation. Nowhere does mouthwatering BBQ grub quite like Texas.

One of the main dishes you need to try while here is Brisket. This is a huge cut of beef that has been marinated, rubbed in various spices and herbs, and smoked to create an amazing dish that quite literally melts in your mouth. Perfect in burgers, sandwiches, on pizzas, or just as a whole dish on its own.

Chicken fried steaks are another Texas classic that you don’t want to miss. The name can be confusing but this is actually a steak that has been prepared in the same way fried chicken is. It is often topped with a creamy peppercorn sauce and served with corn, collard greens, and potatoes.
